Beginning School FAQ

August 27, 2020

Dear Parents,

I realize there are many questions regarding the beginning of the school year. Here’s my best attempt at answering the questions you may have.

When does school start?

Students in grades 7-12 will begin on August 31. Students in grades K-6 will have conferences on August 31 with classes starting on September 1. You should have been contacted by the school to arrange your conference time. Classes will be held on-site.

My child rides the bus. How will riding the bus look?

Morning pickup times will be the same as last year. If you are new to the district, you will be receiving a call with a time. As in the past, there may need to be adjustments as we go through the first week. Students will have assigned seats with those at the beginning of the morning route sitting at the back of the bus. Siblings should sit in the same seat as much as possible. Other than siblings, there should be one student per seat. Students must wear a face covering on the bus.

What if my child needs to ride a different bus?

In the past, parents have occasionally requested their child to ride the bus to La Grande for a variety of reasons. We will no longer be able to honor these requests due to cohorting restrictions.

I drive my child to school. Where should I take them?

Bus loading zones are now in the alleyway on the south side of the high school building. If you are dropping your child off or picking her up, please use the outside lane. If other cars are already in the outside lane, please be patient. We do not want students crossing through moving cars to be picked up.

Will I be able to walk my elementary child into the building?

It breaks my heart to tell you that we will not be able to have extra people in our buildings due to state guidelines. On the first day of school, teachers will greet you and their students at 7:45 at the front of the building.

Does my child enter the building the same way?

K-3 students enter the north (front) entrance of the elementary.

4-6 students enter the east entrance of the elementary.

7-8 students enter through the girls’ locker room.

9-10 students enter through the boys’ locker room.

11-12 students enter through the front entrance.

My child will be joining the classroom virtually. How do they connect?

Your child should have received an invitation to their child’s google classroom. There will be a link in the google classroom to join.

What? Kids will be joining the classroom virtually?

Due to safety concerns, some families do not feel safe sending their children back to the regular classroom at this time. A camera will be focused on the whiteboard of the classroom to allow students to view as the teacher presents. Students in the classroom will not be in the video, but their voices can be heard if they respond to the teacher.

I hope this helps. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at the elementary school office 541-534-2311.
